As first step of initiation Digital Engineering team felt that its crucial to recognize and celebrate the achievements in Implementation of BIM. Digital Engineering BIM Team proudly presents the First BIM Excellence Awards, an esteemed award that celebrates the innovation, coordination and excellence in the journey of digital transformation. BIM serves as a digital representation of physical and functional characteristic of facilitating, enhancing communication and decision making throughout the project lifecycle. This competition was circulated among L&T construction professionals to nominate their project. There were 46 projects nominated for this competition. This robust participation shows the groundbreaking work and vision in driving the adoption and advancement of BIM in projects.

Each submission underwent rigorous evaluation by jury with deep domain knowledge in BIM practices. The criteria encompassed technical proficiency, sustainability, cost effectiveness and overall impact on project outcomes and stakeholder’s satisfaction.

Following scrutiny, six projects were shortlisted from Round 1, each presenting their unique projects highlighting the pioneering work in creating BEP, 3D coordination and streamlined workflows facilitated by related BIM technology and field BIM adoption. On Feb 7th 2024, a final round was presented to esteemed jury
Mr. Sekar AL (Advisor), Mr. Veerappan K (Vice President & Head - EDRC, B&F IC), Mr. Srinivasan S (Executive Vice President & Head - Engineering (PT&D)) - leaders, practitioners with profound experience in construction field. It was difficult challenge faced by the jury in selecting BIM Excellence Award winner and runner. The diverse criteria that were encompassed in scrutiny are BEP, Design authoring, 3D coordination and review, CDE, visualization, 4D BIM, 5D BIM, automation, ROI & testimonials. These projects not only showcased technical excellence but also highlighted the advantages of BIM utilization in project processes and outcomes.

Winner - IIT Bhilai

Runner-up - CIDCO Package IV

The major value adding points that helped winners to rank first are based on 4D tracking report for past three month, CPW certificate, billing & procurement based on BIM measurement sheets in the project. Runner-up was highlighted with utilization 5D BIM, AR implementation and measurement sheet dashboard used for subcontractors. Out of six projects, runner and winner were felicitated by senior leadership.

The annual award function was conducted in HQ Convention Hall on Feb 9th 2024, it was warmest evening to honour the winners of various categories including quality, safety, timely delivery, BIM and digital. Senior leadership from all ICs were invited to felicitate the winning projects within L&T Construction and Digital Awards for Pan-L&T.

Mr. M.V.Satish (Whole Time Director & Sr. Executive Vice President (Buildings)) addressed the gathering by highlighting the successful completion of Statue of Unity project wherein India’s Prime Minister underscored for its importance in safety and quality in project delivery. MVS also raised concern about the impact of delays especially when it affects the margins in infrastructure projects. He emphasised on timely delivery of project, cost efficiency and leverage to use digital tools effectively. It’s crucial for us to consistently deliver projects on time and meet the expectations of the stakeholders. This responsibility equally falls on each one of us to achieve this goal. He wished success to prioritize safety and quality in all the projects of L&T.

Following, Mr. B S Mukund (Head - Building Information Modeling) commenced the address by extending a warm greeting to gathering, he noted that over 200 projects have embraced BIM effectively. The implementation of BIM integrated platform which was initiated 3 years back has successful adoption in more than 50 projects. Going forward BIM integration will be implemented 80% – 100% of 3D projects within next year. This comprehensive approach includes the incorporation of virtual reality, augmented reality, 3D control & planning, scan to BIM, BIM – GIS integration, and connecting the built model to project timeline enabling support, quality and control. He also highlighted jury’s meticulous evaluation of projects from conception to final as – built stage. He expressed his gratitude to all participants for their contributions to this significant endeavour.

"Choosing a recipient for the BIM Excellence Award proved challenging but fulfilling, given the remarkable BIM implementations exhibited by many projects. It is a very essential tool which can help in project monitoring, interdisciplinary collaboration, clash detection, and quantification. I hope to see it implemented across all projects, becoming an integral part of all project phases very soon”.

Advisor

‘It was a pleasant but very tough task to select winner for BIM excellence award since many projects showed excellent BIM implementation. They are moving from 3D level to 4D/5D and use AR/VR/MR technology effectively. Many sites were monitoring projects through BIM and use it for site planning, quantification, interdisciplinary collaboration and many more. Hope this trend will continue and spread to all other sites’

Veerappan K

Vice President & Head - EDRC, B&F IC

When Mukund approached me to be one of the panel members for the evaluation for BIM awards, I had a mixed feeling, will I be able to do justice by allocating enough time? I also was excited to review the BIM adoption at different projects of L&T construction. As we went through the presentations, I was very impressed with the level of detail, we all had some interesting conversations on the different BIM use cases. When the detailed review was completed, I had clear view that we should look at the level of application at the project beyond the 3D part, where across the teams we can see a reasonable level of maturity. The top teams were very close to each other in terms of the different usages and the benefits that accrued from the adoption of BIM. The different use cases from the different projects when combined can give all the projects a very good list of applications that BIM can be used for the benefit of the Project Execution. “I would like to congratulate all the participants and the project team who used BIM for different project applications, some very innovative implementation which results in reduction of cost and time. I am sure in coming years BIM award will be one of the most seriously contested awards and in turn spur further interest in its adoption by various projects.”

Srinivasan S

Executive Vice President & Head - Engineering (PT&D)
